Novelis is shutting down two plants in the USA.

Two heartbreaking news items come from the aluminum sector. Recycling giant Novelis is going to shut down two plants, the Fairmont plant at the end of June and the Chesterfield plant next month, respectively.

Fairmont Plant, West Virginia:

The world’s largest aluminum recycler, Novelis, is to close one more manufacturing facility in Fairmont, West Virginia, by June 30, 2025. Due to that situation, about 200 employees will be impacted because this closure is permanent.

The company released the following statement regarding the closure.

“Novelis is consolidating its U.S. operations and has made the difficult decision to close operations in Fairmont, West Virginia, which will take effect on June 30, 2025. Our workforce is deeply valued for their hard work and decades of dedication, and we are committed to handling their transition with the utmost respect and care.

We want to express our gratitude to the city of Fairmont and the state of West Virginia for allowing us to serve this region for many years. It’s been a privilege to be a part of this community.”

The plant shifts were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday before the Monday closure announcement. Work is set to resume on Wednesday, continuing until the final shutdown.

Chesterfield plant:

Novelis is planning to shut down its production facility at 1801 Reymet Road in Chesterfield, Richmond, next month (May 30). This closure will impact more than 70 jobs.

The company stated that it is closing as part of a long-term growth strategy aimed at simplifying its operations and streamlining its portfolio.

Novelis owns a nearly 50,000-square-foot facility on a 3.5-acre property at 1801 Reymet Road and a nearby 21-acre property that includes a cluster of industrial buildings at 1701 Reymet Road.

Previous Novelis Closure:

Last year in June, Novelis shut down its Buckhannon production facility. At that time, 80 people were impacted.
